Gordon West the marine SSB/ham guru is emphatic about not needing to do anything about the counterpoise other than a good ground like a sea cock.  He said he now believes that running all that copper is a waste of money and time. The ocean is the best counterpoise there is.  We removed our copper except for one that goes to the sacrificial zinc and the tuner and it works just fine.
