I know I've seen a discussion on autopilots in this forum before but I can't seem to find it for reference.  We are about to upgrade our auto pilot (currently an old Autohelm 2000 Combi) and would appreciate some advice on a reasonable alternative system.

We're not looking for a highly integrated system, a simple control head and capable actuator will meet our needs.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks - Don

I think this is the most powerful tiller pilot you can get  but it's only rated for 13,000 pound boat . For motor sailing and light sailing it should be good .

This is the Pelagic , I think it's a lot less expensive it will also hook up to a Monitor .

This shot is of Michael Poor's boat .

    Hi Don

The Simrad TP32 will work for motoring and light air sailing, but the Raymarine EV will do a better job in all conditions. The Raymarine actuators are not the best for longevity but in my opinion they are the best choice given the big picture. I have had both and that's my opinion

    Good luck

Thanks Gary.  We have decided to purchase the Pelagic system.  Every review and comment I read on Pelagic was positive.  My conversations with Brian at Pelagic were helpful, the system seems simple enough to install, and the price was right.  There is a bit of a lead time on the order but we expect to receive it in the next week or two.  I'll report back after we stall and use the system.

Thanks again for your reply.  Don

We also went with the Pelagic autopilot. After three years of using it we have no complaints. It will steer us thru heavy weather when other boats are having to hand steer.

We've been a little busy since I last checked out the forum, but I wanted to make a follow-up comment on the new Pelagic autopilot.  We received the new autopilot within the 4 week time frame as promised.  The installation was really straight forward and I had it completed in a couple of hours.

We originally thought the actuator would fit exactly where the old Raymarine actuator was but we needed to extend the whole unit about 4" for a perfect fit. I contacted Brian at Pelagic and he sent me a 4" extension over night - exactly what we needed!  Since we installed the unit, we've only sailed the boat 5 or 6 times but, under a variety of sea conditions and points of sail, the Pelagic system has worked as anticipated.  I'm still playing with the system a little and, based on Brian's suggestion, I plan to adjust the gain when I have a little more time.

Customer service is outstanding! Available by phone, text, and email.  Extraordinarily responsive and professional. Overall - we couldn't be happier with our Pelagic decision!

Glad to hear the Pelagic unit worked out!

Brian is one of the members of Singlehanded Sailing Society here in San Francsico and has a load of blue water experience he pours into them. I've been one of his test boats as he's been working and fine tuning the actuators. He's been designing them with us full keelers in mind. Keep us posted on how it holds up and performs.

    Cheers,
