I would like to get rid of the staysail topping lift , do you think that would hurt sailing performance ? Thanks ,Mark .

It would not hurt the sailing performance, but the boom would fall down on the deck when you lowered the sail. It would also flail around when you were lowering the sail. Dangerous.

Thanks Bud , yesterday we took lil' Patricia A out in superb conditions . Flat seas and blowin 15-17 . Although we were not reefed we probably should have been because we were getting even stronger gusts . Anyhow I un clipped the topping lift (after hoisting ) and IMO the staysl' had good shape , not to mention we were moving at a decent pace , chain plates in the water and little weather helm . When we were ready to lower the staysl' I clipped the topping lift back on .  Now my reason for the question , I want to replace my steaming light , the one I have now is small and smooth . The new one will be bigger because it is a combo steamer/deck light . The topping lift will rub it , and I'm afraid might damage it  . I could mount the new light above the toplift , I'm going to look into that . But for now I'm thinking keep the toplift and just un clip and move it out of the way when sailing . Thanks ,Mark .
