Relocating a Westsail to Houston Texas

    Hello, I am looking at possibly relocating my Westsail 32 to the Houston Texas area. Anyone aware of safe marinas (hurricane protection) in the area?  Also, interested in transporting the boat from the Pacific Northwest, so any experiences with a trucking a Westsail across the US would also be helpful.  Finally, comments about the sailing in the area would be appreciated.  Thanks much!

    Hi Danny,

    Legend Point Marina is a great location. There are 5 westsail 32's here and we would love to have another one. I am hosting a Rendezvous September 27 - 29th at Legend Point Marina, Check the Rendezvous site for the Marina Info. The only down side is they are fixed piers, but it's a great "hurricane hole". Watergate Yachting Center and Seabrook Shipyard are also good locations with floating piers. The Sailing in Galveston Bay is 10 month's out of the year, GBCA is a great local club that hosts a number of races and the saturday night "Rum Race" series. They have a "Club Handicap" class which caters to the cruising type crowd. There are a number of offshore races as well every year, to include the "Harvest Moon Regatta", which is a 150 mile race from Galveston to Port Aransas. I will be taking Morning Sun W32 #514 on this race this year and will be joined by Tate and Dani from New Orleans who own W32 Sundowner to crew with me on the race down. I hope you have registered for the rondezvous and look foward to meeting up with you.

    Thanks for the quick reply.  I am very happy to hear that there is an active group of Westsailer's in the area.  I am traveling to the Houston to interview for a job this coming Sunday/Monday/Tuesday and wanted to check out marinas at the same time, as my Westsail Sea Suenos (Hull 135) would come with me if I move.  I will probably visit both marinas you mentioned.  I am also excited about the sailing opportunities in the area. If you happen to be around the marina one of those days, I it would be great to talk with you as the sailing opportunities available will be a big part of whether I relocate.

    I recently shipped our Westsail 32 from Oklahoma to Souris, Prince Edward Island in Canada. Used Bill West at a1haul-a-boat.  He was competitive, on schedule, and the move caused only minor damage to a caprail because the tie downs were passed over the cap rail rather than through the hawse pipes.  Contact info is a1haulaboat@hotmail.com .

    I just shipped a W32 from Sausalito to Houston in June. I am at Watergate Marina.

    I shipped a Westsail 32 from Michigan to Marina Del Rey California. I found scheduling to be the biggest problem if you are wide open to variable dates then it becomes less expensive and you have a much better choice of who to use. When setting it up I found the people willing to talk to you but then no contact unless they have a truck heading your way. I ended up costing 10,000 be cause there return trip canceled. I also thought I was paying to get a newer truck and better outfitted unit but when it showed up it was nothing like the one pictured in the web site. All that being said it arrived on time with very good communication with the driver without any damage. I packed the mast and roller furler with carpet myself and that worked well. I had the fuel tanks drained and later learned the driver said that was not necessary although I think I now have a loose baffle in one of the tanks. Hope this helps

    Hello,   My wife and I live in SA and we are in the process of moving Destinys Dream over to Rockport.  There is a Texas company called WeHaulBoats out of Healy Texas we have been speaking with.  They hauled 2 W 32's just this summer.  Check their website. WeHaulBoats.com.  Lots of positive feedback.  We are now attempting to find a reasonable truck from  San Carlos Mexico up to Tucson where WHB will take over.  Give them a shout.

    Greg:  You were wise to drain your tanks.  That is the recommended practice which, to my detriment, I did not follow.  When I shipped 5 years ago the tanks were original 1976 models, they were full, and one split a seam on the way across.  Forty gallons of diesel sloshing back and forth from stem to stern under the sole is no joke.  This time the tanks were brand new, they weren't anywhere near full so I didn't drain --- no issues but I should still have followed protocol.

    By the way, hauling via semitrailer should run around $5 per loaded mile at the current price of diesel and bearing in mind the fact that the route is probably going to be less than direct because of width restrictions.  If the price of diesel goes up a dollar a gallon, that should not add more than 20 cents per mile to the cost.  If you can find a haul at $4 you have a real bargain.  If it's much over $5 you're being stung.

    The guy who moved my boat from the Chesapeake to Lake Michigan was great.  He does it for fun, has moved I think 2+ WS32's now, and costs around $3/mile.  Not the spectacular semi orchastrated production, but is confident in is 3 axel trailer and large deisel Dodge.  He takes his time to ensure the safety of the vessel... we are sailors right?  I'll use him again.
