Great article and relevant even after 20+yrs. My wife & I are in the process of getting our boat ready for cruising, so were not 'cruisers' yet, but we have lived a remote life here in the arctic and a little bit south when we lived in former off the the grid cabins. We understand the allure of creature comforts & routine, it's very addictive & easy, much like a drug. This is our main interest in getting our boat & taking the plunge; we don't want to have a routine life anymore, we want to kick the habit.
As a wildlife officer it always mystified me when you would go into a camping areas or camp grounds that were relatively empty and find tenters or rv's all huddled together instead of spreading out, especially ones that didn't know each other. It was like, they wanted to escape the 'busy world' and get back to 'nature' with some 'camping', but only in the safety of numbers; as if they would be 'attacked' if went out on their own.
