Propeller Removal

    OK...I'm new at this... Is there a secret to removing the Propeller on a W28?  Cotter pins removed and when I get the outer nut to the end of the shaft...STOP.  Now, I'm a big guy and used to play Linebacker, and I can't budge it once the outer threads get to the end of the shaft.

    First thing is first.  Turn the nut and move it forward, don't try to force it off the end.  Inspect the prop threads for burrs/bends and make sure it can actually come off cleanly.  If that doesn't work you can try heating up the nut with a torch to get it off.  Put some oil on the threads to keep it from galling as you work it off.

    I'm with Tate.  I just had the prop on my W28 off a couple weeks ago and there's no trick. Sounds like the last bit of thread on the shaft is boogered up.  Pretty coarse thread so it should be relatively easy to see and, hopefully, to clean up with a file.

    BTW, when you get the nut off and start to pull the prop, assuming you have a 14" (or smaller) 3-blade prop, it really will come off past the rudder.  You have to move the rudder and the prop until you find just the right combination.  But the combination is there.  Good luck.

    Thanks!  Thought I was missing some secret hidden pin somewhere.  I'll let you know how it goes.

    The Rudder is off being reworked, Pics here... so.. nothing in the way.  Tomorrow is my day off and I'll let you know how it goes.

    The slot you are seeing is the keyway for the prop shaft key.  The shaft itself has a cut out and the prop has a cut out that align.  Then a small piece of metal "the key" is slid into this slot and it holds the prop and the shaft together.  

    You should be able to pull the prop off now.  It has to be a straight pull aft until you get past the key.  You should probably get the prop puller or borrow one.  Sometimes the prop is a real pain to get off.

    I thought is was some kind of key/pin. I've seen them on other shafts...this is my first time pulling a boat prop.

    How about a Gear Puller?  I'm in Central GA and Prop Pullers are a little rare around here.  I hate to have to buy on for $80 and only use it once.

    If the gear or wheel puller is big enough it will work.  You can also heat up the prop with a torch if you're careful.

    The prop puller is a good little item to have.  Could earn you a 6 pack from a neighbor who needs one.

    This is just an example (I have never done business with them)

    I have one like this, and have used it 4+ times in and out of the water (Nice to have and takes up little space and you do not need to remove the rudder to pull it).  If you use one underwater please make sure it has a hole in it to tie a line to so that you can not lose it (sink). (I tied lines also for the dedicated wrenches I have for the prop nuts)

    Again never delt with these guys just googled the words.

    In any case The nuts should come off without much force as others have noted (check to see if all of the cotter pin came out).   As for the puller it makes a pop when she lets go.

    The gear puller may work but not with the rudder on, if you do, please be very careful, they can slip .
