We have been using Navionics/Boating on a new iPad but had had problems with the program seizing up. We are thinking of installing radar as well as a multifunctional display. Any recommendations would be most welcome. Also, where do people usually install chart plotters so that they are clearly visible from the helm - an iPad or Toughbook loose in the cockpit does not seem ideal.

    Vikram:

On Pygmalion, I used a metal arm to secure the chart plotter so it swings out into the companion way.

    See the pic attached.

Thanks, Jay. What do you do in bad weather when you want to leave the hatch closed?

I'm not out much in bad weather :) -- but when the hatch is closed - the plotter can be seen though some water may enter the cabin.

Maybe a separate set of boards could be made with a way to have the plotter outside and the hatch and boards in place.

    Hi Jay,

Where do I find the  articulating arm for the plotter?

    Thanks

Hello Vikram and Tommy,   My arrangement is nearly identical to Jays.   I bought my swingarm from West Marine MANY years ago.  In my case, I have swinging doors with large windows in my entry way.  I can easily see through the windows from the cockpit with the doors and hatch closed.  I have a radar display on the swingarm.  Not a chart plotter.    Good luck.     Dave

On Glorious I like the swing mount arm that enables me to view the display at my chart table position or swung out to view from the cockpit. I have a B&G Vulcan 12R MFD for radar and chart plotter functions.

I’m also going to do a rail mount for my iPad in the cockpit if I have to close the companionway hatch, if necessary. There are lots of choices with all kinds of price points for the rail mounts. Take your pick. Here is the one I got off of Amazon.
