I've been using the original bronze body fuel filter (Groco?) that came with my boat, vintage 1974 - and it seems to do the job, however it's a mess to change the filter - hard to keep from dumping some diesel fuel into the pan below the engine.  What are most of you skippers using?  Racors?  Any recommendations?  -Tom Koehl

    Tom:

Pygmalion - has two pre filters -- both were old and hard to change the filters and the drain was stuck closed.

I replaced one of the two with a Racor and use it all the time -- I find it fairly easy to change the filter and it sure does catch the "stuff" from the tank - I do keep an eye on the filters bowl and drain off as needed.

If the boat leaves for a long trip - the other one will also be changed out for a Racor - only one type of spare filters will need  to be on hand:)

Jay, thanks for the recommendation.  Do you recall the model of Racor filter? -Tom

Sorry Tom, I don't recall- I'll try to get the info when I'm at the boat next - this weekend I hope.

We installed the Racor 245R filter.  It has a priming pump built into the top which makes filling the filter and bleeding the engine fairly easy and much less messy.

Kevin, Thanks.  That's not a model I've looked at, but anything that makes it less messy is great.  -Tom

I found a good source but wonder what micron ltration is most practical. Apparently the 2 is standard, but Racor states that 2 micron is most appropriate for the final stage of filtration, yet the Betamarine engine has a final filter mounted inline.  What do most of you other owners recommend?  -Tom

    Tom,

We've used the 10 micron in our Racor and never found any dirt in our secondary filter on our engine.  I try to change the Racor filter every 50 to 70 hours of run time and have run over 200 hours on the engines secondary filter.   Of course your experience may vary depending on fuel quality and tank condition.

We've been lucky and never had much issue with water in our fuel.   The Racor filters have a drain that allows you to remove water and sludge from the bottom of the bowl.

I have the Racor 75/B32016-10 Dual Fuel Filter/Water Separator and filter to 2 microns before fuel ever gets to engine. I also have a vacuum gauge on the filter system to keep track of filter condition. If vacuum gauge shows need for filter change I just turn the lever and run on new filter and change at next opportunity.Very easy to change out as it is screw on type filter.

I also have the ability to polish the fuel through the same filter system which I will do for about an hour after filling the tanks. The 2 micron filters can be difficult to find so I order 8 at a time. Never lost engine due to poor fuel or water. Filters are cheap insurance.

Gentlemen, thank you for the input.  I spoke to both Racor, Betamarine, and Bud, and the best recommendation was to use the Racor 215 unit.  Betamarine thought the turbine units were great because of the ease of filter changes, but Racor and Bud explained that the turbine models are designed for much greater fuel flow and would be compromised by the low flow rates of the Betamarine 1505 engine.  Definitely a good idea to have several filter elements as spares.
