I'm looking to hide/fix a number of area on Pygmalion W32 that have gel coat cracks as well the some flaking in the low areas where water stands on the desk (just ahead of the scuppers drains port and stb)

I ran across a product called MagicEzy - to expensive to try several colors - but recommended by Svendsen's - short of hiring their gel coat guy.

I'm wondering if any one has tried the product and if so - what color (there are 5 whites to choose from) is the best match for "white" 40 year old gel coat.

Of course the MagicEzy color samples are different colors depending which piece of marketing material you have:( .

    Jay :

This looks pretty nice: but you may have to pop out allot of those chips (they are some bits That are broken off under where you see the cracks)  try to pry one little chip out and you may find a little pothole 1/4 to 3/8 dia. where there was just a half circle of that dia.

To use any gel coat repair, the full and complete bond is important! (so you may end up digging out many of the little potholes.  But It looks like a ? gelcoat with wax?  If it works well, I may need to try some!  I have a few spots that need touch up. I had planed on doing it the old fashion way, with gel coat and blending pigment, then painting with vinyl for cure. +/- , and sanding back to level.

In any case, I hope this works well, they did not have that much info on the web+/-

The way Norm describes it sounds like the best way . Although a quick and dirty way , maybe not so dirty . You could try Marine Tex , it might be a good match .

    Mark :

I am not sure what is in the stuff Jay is talking about

(It May have other stuff beside gelcoat which is not a great glue in its' self)

But they come up with new and better stuff all the time, It is just hard to tell if it is better until some one tries it out.  Please note;  Jay has been at the forefront in this regard, see his writeup on soundproofing the engine room, I do have to say thanks to Jay for trying stuff out, and reporting back on the result.

    Norm

p.s. I would love to find a good repair that does not take to much time; thus allowing more beer drinking to be done.

Magic Easy, I just googled that . Looks like good stuff . The color chart is a little funky . My vote for best match is Snow White , for a white Westsail . Ours is a off white , so maybe my match would be the Oyster .

Ps . why not just drink beer when doing a repair ?

thanks for the comments - surface prep will be a major part of the job... with gel coat the color has to be matched - with the magic esy product at least you have choices.

They have a crack filling and chip filling versions... guess I'll be taking a best guess...

The original white that Westsail used was called "Hatteras" white.  It was a common white and produced by most paint manufacture and gel coat producers. It is still available.     Spectrum Color, in Auburn Washington, can supply any gel cost color ever made.

A bit off topic but directed at Mark:

I don't normally drink beer while sailing (kind of like a coke bottle shaken = I don't feel so good)  But at anchor, or at the dock a cold one is so great!!!!!

For myself; I have found it works out much better to drink the beer after the work (it somehow comes out better)

But thanks for the time saving though, I just don't multi task well, so I work, then drink which leads to eating then sleep. The next day starts it all over, which seams like a great thing. :)

    Have a great day:

Dave: Thanks for the color name and supplier... I'll check it out.  Found this site

The web site has a lot of choices - wonder how close the color will be -- old vs new?

Would a paint be just as good or better then gel coat considering application etc.

Found a Hatteras White "film" by Interlux at West Marine

    Thanks
