    Hi All,

One of my numerous ongoing projects is converting my Aries fixed hydrovane rudder to the hinged version. I'd appreciate a post of any photos of the hinge area that are available for guidance. There are some on the WOA Picasa site but none with quite the detail I need.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey Jim,

That would be much appreciated. I got this unit with the boat and it was never mounted by the previous owner and was missing the rudder. The Aries unit itself is of the folding type and has the hinge piece but the rudder I ultimately found is of the fixed type. I believe I will have to cut a slot into the rudder stock to accept the hinge but need some confirmation before I do something irrevocably stupid.

    Thanks,

    Werner

Sorry for the delay -- and I never seem to get an image to post so you will have to click on these:

The design is simple but neat. The (top part ) coupling slides down over the hinge making the shaft rigid. The spring keeps it in place and the rope is in case to hit something hard.

If you do -- the couple has a groove cut most of the way through it to create a shear pin.

So instead of breaking something else the coupling is sacrificed. I happen to have 2 spares.

    Hope this helps.

    Jim

    Jim,

Those photos help tremendously. I should be able to do the modification with what you've posted. My fitting uses a drift pin for the hinge. From the photo it looks as if your fitting uses machine screws, is that correct? I really appreciate the help, thanks Jim.

The pins look the same from both sides -- and I'm not sure what they are.

They don't have any slot or means for turning so they must just be driven in?

Correction from my previous -- the shear coupling is fixed -- it it the lower piece that slides up. The breaking will occur above the hinge.

    Hope this helps --

    Jim,

That last photo is perfect. This along with the others will have me in business. Thanks for your help. Now I just have to get up my courage to drill the boomkin for the mounting tubes!
