Cape Horn Toucana Installation

Eric at Cape Horn has some questions about the Toucana installation that I cannot answer.  Does anyone have the windvane mounted on the stainless steel boomkin?  If so, did you mount the bottom braces to the "eyeplates" beneath the boomkin or to the hull, and why did you make that choice?   I have photos from Bud that show the installation on one boat that has the braces attached to the forward horizontal plates which Bud puts on to support a teak platform, but not to the vertical plates that are about 2 feet forward from the aft end of the boomkin (which seems like a more natural attachment point).   Would this mounting position interfere with the boomkin whisker stays?   Any help would be appreciated.  -Tom

    Tom,

"Drifter" has the Cape Horn mounted on Bud's stainless steel boomkin. It's likely that the photos that Bud sent were of my boat (previously named "Xapic".

These photos were taken as I just began the restoration, but they might show the details of the vane mounting better than the photos Bud sent you. It appears that the bottom braces were mounted directly to the hull, beneath the "eyeplates".

Since I didn't install the vane initially, I can't really answer your questions with regard to why it was done this way. I believe this was done by Rick Kennerly (two owners back). Rick is easy enough to find on the web. Search for "Rick Kennerly" or "Rick the Mouseherder". I can send you contact info, if you can't find him.

    Hope this helps.

Yes... like me, he's a professional programmer and he's used the name "Rick the Mouseherder" for years. I believe he has even copyrighted the name.

    Tom,

We mounted our Caphorn to the eyeplates on the stainless boomkin. It seemed silly to run tubes all the way to the hull when there is a good, sturdy point on the boomkin..

    Mounting from above

    Mounting from behind

    From Side 1

    From Side 2

Also, I've emailed a few more photos that I don't have on picasa.
