Caulking under cap rails

I have the cap rails off and the old caulk out. Will clean with acetone. Why can't I use a good polyurethane, rather than the expensive stuff? I use poly around the windows of rental and it gets a lot more exposure to the elements than it would under the cap rail.

I sail in fresh water on Lake Superior.

    Dennis:

Check out http://www.westsail.org/westsailFAQ where we have multiple stories and write ups for the caprails over the last 7 years.

I can't comment one way or the other on the proposed replacement caulk -- you just don't want to ever do it again:)

On Pygmalion - I am now epoxying the joint flush and using SIS 440 in a thin layer between the now flush joint and the cap rails...

Check out the Dave King - reglass the whole area and use just an eyebrow of teak on the outside.

The full membership should have access - the free forum membership does not...

Why not? The way I see it is for the most part polyurethane is polyurethane, right? Being in the Western Caribbean "marine" polyurethane around here is REALLY expensive so everyone just uses commercial polyurethane window caulking (Sikkaflex).

I removed my caprails and recaulked using Sikkaflex a few months ago. No complaints here.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I'll buy the best stuff at the lumber yard, which is still a third the price of the marine offerings.
