Thank for sending the owners service manual, I have four out a bit of history behind Sandshoe and interestingly that she is a factory Westsail 33 not 32 - apparently they were a limited run. Any ideas as to the differences?

    Jay,

Whoever told you the 33 was a Westsail factory boat was not telling you the truth.  The 33 was built by a company in Australia, and they used the Atkins lines to delvlope their own boat.  They started calling it a Westsail only because the Westsail Corp. had already gone out of business, and they wanted any publicity they could get.  I checked with the original owner of Westsail, and he said he never did give any permission for another company to use the name, at least as long as he was running the company.  He did not know what Westsail International did though, as they took over in 1977 after the bankrupcy, and ran the company until 1980, when they closed down completely.

Thanks for the info Bud, the info I have if that it was built in Freemantle in 1984 - and I have since been told it was a 33, not 32.  So I am guessing that it is not a "proper" Westsail? Do you know of any real differences between the two?  Or anyone else in the forum owing the 33's?

    Cheers

    Jay:

I'd like to have the differences for the web site -- maybe you attend a Rendezvous where you can compare the boats and let us all know what you found?

Just looking at the photos in your profile show quite a few MAJOR differences.  For one, not many W32s have a wheel (I've only seen one).  And I've never ever seen a W32 with a pilot house.  The mast and pulpit around the mast look very different and even the cap rails are angled differently.  I'm sure the differences are numerous.

I found the image below of a W32 with a pilot house -

My understanding is that it has been recycled some time ago:(

Thanks for the info - it seems we have A LOT to learn.  we also have a wheel inside too!  I will post some more pics.  As fas as being able to compare the two models side by side it unlikely as we live on Lord Howe Island, New South Wales, Australia.  So unfortunately we are not able to be involved in either twilight races or monthly meetings.  Be we hope to be sailing over to Sydney in the next 12 months if anyone owns a W32 there?
