chain locker bulkhead

I had to remove the chain locker bulkhead do to Sampson post rot.

I wanted to know if I need to install the foam when I re-install a new bulkhead? If so what type of foam was it? I know the foam helps from creating hard lines on the hull but this is such a small space.

Micheal:  I don't recall any foam in or near the chain locker on Pygmalion.  I did have some foam between the vberth battens and hull - that just collected mold and are removed when I have the battens removed for some other service...

I'm very sure foam between the bulkhead and the hull eases hard-lines. I use to sail a clipper marine and when you viewed down the hull while out of the water you could see faint lines created from the lack of soft material between the bulkhead and hull. There is a name for this but I'm at a loss for now.

Our Westsail did have foam strips installed (i removed them) but I'm just not sure what to use as a replacement or if its necessary so close to the fore-peak. I would defiantly install the foam between every other bulkhead on the boat.

Another detail I ponder is if I can use a foam core to make the bulkhead or simply stick to wood as a core? decisions decision - Sampson post removal easy, bulkhead details tricky!

Big difference in the thickness of the hull laminate between the Westsail and the Clipper.  No need to use a foam strip between the bulkhead edge and the hull.  However that said, the foam triangle at the intersection of the bulkhead and the hull makes it much easier to get a good bond with mat and cloth.

    Ahoy Michael,

The proper foam to use in that application would be PVC foam, cut into a trapezoidal shape.  Two brand names are Divinicell and klegecell.  One source is FiberglassSupply Inc. at 509-493-3464 or www.fiberglasssupply.com

I regret I do not know the type of foam used originally by Westsail as that was a long time ago.

    Good luck,     Dave
