fuel tank replacement

    I am presently in Turkey on the hard and have to consider fuel tank replacment.  Does anyone have any experience with this issue.  I had an old guy that did it and cannot contact him.  Ideas?

    Not a fun job!  I replaced mine, but I had the engine out at the time.  It took a lot of jockeying to get them out.   A number of folks had to trim off part of the tank shelves and then reattach them after the new ones are in.   If you have anything mounted on the ER side of the forward bulkhead it will probably need to come off.  You need to contact Bud Taplin at Worldcruiser for advice.  - Tom Koehl

    Please note that the replacement to which Tom Koehl makes reference is for his W32, not for a W42. Although the job on a W32 is a PITA, it pales to the same task on a W42/W43.

    Note that there was more than one tank style used, but I don't know first-hand whether or not this affects the ease or difficulty of your task. Hopefully, the latter style would simplify the process. Bud's Westsail Service Manual makes a reference to the w42/43 tanks on page G-3. But this is only a single short page, with relatively little information.

    There were several threads regarding this topic in the forum archives. You might be able to find some of them, if you manually scour the PDFs. Or, simply go to my archive site at http://Westsail.info and find them with a simple, yet effective search. 

    I know Andre Beauregard had tackled this on a W42. Michael Belian did so on his W43, Infini, and I saw Michael's job in progress. It was not an easy task, but it was a top-knotch job in the end. Dave Kall may have replaced the tanks on his W42, Elysium. I can't recall for certain, but you can check his blog site. Other possibilities to check are Mike and Chris Perkins (W42 Nightingale), Will Pierson and Debbie Martin. Some of these folks have never been members, but you may be able to find their old posts in the PDF archives. If you have no luck, contact me offline and I'll see that you get the information you need from my personal copies of searchable archives.

    Hi Jack.  thanks for all the names.  I dropped bud an  email about the measurements of the tanks and the center tank replacements.  As the boat is in Turkey and I'd love th have the tanks for the trip home info is real important to me now.  The guys n turkey can do anything I ask them to do.  I just don't know what to ask.  I changed out engines in 2007 myself and put in a Perkins M 92.  Just about the same foot print of the ole 4-108 but 90 hp and a BIG difference for me.  How do I start the PDF archive inquiry.?  I'm a better sailor than a computer geek.  thanks for all the help.  I'll start trying to get a hold of the guys you mentioned.  i assume they are WOA members.  Again, many thanks tom

    For the pdf compliations - goto the main page of this forum and look for the link OLD Westsail 42/43 forum -- also look at the In the Yard forum again top of the page.

    I recommend downloading the pdf so your search is faster with the local copy.

    Changing the tanks is NOT a fun job but very necessary.

    Searching the PDFs is neither fun nor necessary. You will always find some who prefer to do things the hard way. But the incredibly high frequency of searches performed on the Westsail.info archive would indicate that most of us prefer a better way.

    You don't need to be a genius to search a PDF file.  Just view the file on your screen using whatever PDF viewer you have.  Then type CTRL-F for "find" to do a search.  (if you have a Mac, I don't know.  I can't even say if Macs have a F key or a CTRL key.)

    Forum archives have never been, nor will they ever be, the right way to document or search such information.  The information you need may be spread over several threads, under several categories, and interspersed with "me too" posts and outdated information (call ###-####, the price is $$$.$$).   By analogy, it would be like watching a 100 hour long video of Bud installing a Beta engine instead of reading Bud's two pages on the subject in his Technical Manual.  

    I urge any WOA member who has substantial experience in an area of general interest, to write it up as an article.   Jay can post the article immediately in the FAQ area on this web site, and I can publish it in Windblown.   Admittedly, it takes more effort to make an article than a forum post. However, and article has permanent value to members whereas a forum post has only temporary value.  (By the way, FAQ articles need not be static.  They can be expanded and/or updated as time goes on.)  

    Ditto any member like Tom who does do the work to ferret out information from old forum posts.  Please have mercy on your fellow members, and condense your research into an article for the FAQ and/or Windblown.

    I replaced all the tanks on the WS42 I restored in the late '90's before we took off for Australia.  Sold the boat as the cruise was interrupted about halfway.  I heard the boat was sold at a bankruptcy auction in Monterey a number of years back.

    I have pictures I can scan and forward if you need them.  It is a PITA but more undoing and then refitting than complicated.  I replaced the fuel tanks with 5086 AL that I then primer etched, zinc chromate primed and then put a roofing plastic over that.  Set them on rubber pads so there would be no movement.  Water tanks were SS but I did not do an covering of them.  I added more fuel tanks than water as one can make water, not diesel.

    Make sure you have a vent line for each tank.
