Are there any Westsail owners on this forum at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City. I noticed one W32 in dry storage, the name has slipped my mind. I also thought I saw a W42 in a slip if I wasn't mistaken.

I'm considering a slip there and would love to ask some questions over email: nathanica at gmail dot com.

    Hi,

That's my W32 up in the yard at Liberty. I had it trucked in from California this summer and I'm hoping to piece it back together for launch this spring (much to my wife's chagrin, the bowsprit is sitting in our living room at the moment). Anyway, I'm trying to decide where to keep the boat and Liberty is on the list. I lived aboard there on a Pearson 10m about 12 years ago before heading out west, but things have changed a lot since then. I also managed the boatyard about 15 years ago but that's another story. What I can say about Liberty Landing is that it was relatively well protected from weather, and not too bad in terms of wake back then. It's under new management which is a good thing since it used to be absolute chaos and anarchy for years. As far as I know the docks are in decent shape and things are civilized enough now. I'm hoping to connect with a friend who has his 35' sloop there for almost twenty years. I expect he will provide more information. One other issue is that the rate sheet is unclear to me for summer dockage, but I hope to speak with them this week.

Great. i hope to see you out sailing. The Liberty Landing rate sheet confused me as well. Any idea if they charge us at 32 or 40 feet due to bowsprit and boomkin? I also read an active captain review where someone complained that they don't let you do your own boat work including painting. I'm going to speak with the Dockmaster this week, but would love to get the inside scoop from someone impartial. I love your boat by the way. I currently have blue gunwhales, but have been planning to repaint them white this summer. I have my boat at Liberty Harbor across the channel.

Cool, thanks for making contact. I'm afraid they probably do charge for overall length as they will charge for slip size and not allow any hanging over or sticking out. It is true that the yard does not allow you to paint or even sand the bottom, but I have witnessed people doing so during off hours and weekends. It is technically a state park as well as an EPA superfund site, so other entities/officials may object to painting a boat on their toxic waste dump. Also, there is no reliable electricity and no water in the yard. I was plugging into a lamp post with about 150' of cord, but the outlet burnt up. Hard to work without power.

Thanks for the info. I'll check in with the dockmaster and see from there.

Perhaps you've both learned more in the last few weeks, but I figured I'd share what little I could. I lived aboard there for the winter of 04/05, and kept the boat at the marina for another year, so my experience will only be worth so much after 10 years (and what sounds like a lot of change), but I can confirm that they did include the sticks when charging for/assigning slips, as Jesse suspected they would.

I'm not sure if the following is still the case, but back then Liberty Landing was in charge of the small marina on the same side of the inlet as (and right next to the entrance of) Liberty Harbor, and that's where we had our slip. (Mike Dougan's gaff-rigged 32, Sanyassin, was also there at the time.) When that little marina was built, the shore power wasn't set up to be metered, so, unlike the rest of Liberty Landing, or just about any other marina I've been to, electricity over there was free. Plenty of winter slips were available on that side, but summer dibs went to the previous year's slip holders, so if all the summer boats came back, winter boats could get bumped to the main marina. (That year, I think two boats didn't reclaim their slips, and Gitane got to stay.)

I've no idea where my experience falls on the scale between Jesse's earlier and recent impressions (a management shakeup happened soon before we arrived, if I recall correctly, and it looks like there's been another one since), but I did love living there when I did. I'd be interested to hear more of how you both find it these days, as you look into slips/spend time there.

I signed an annual contract with Liberty today for a 40' slip. The total was $8220 for in water dockage through to April 15 2015. Half paid now, the rest due in September. She claims there were only two 40' slips left but who knows.

Electricity will be charged directly from PSGE and relatively secure parking is included.

The oddity of the rate sheet is explained by the fact that they only offer 30' slips for just the summer season. Everything else requires a full year commitment. There is no way they will allow hanging over or sticking out so I'll be leaving the Monitor off and tie up a little crooked so as not to protrude from the slip in any way.

This may not be the ideal marina experience but the boat should be safe, accessible and with any luck I'll have decent neighbours.

So if my math is right - that's $17/foot/month?

    Jay,

I believe that's how it averages out but they would say the winter is cheaper.

One benefit with the contract that I just learned of is free drop off/ pick up access at the pier 25 long dock in Manhattan. Could be useful in saving guests the expense and time of a trip to Jersey.

    Congrats, Jesse.
The price has changed much less than I feared it would've in 10 years. The full-year rate back then was $7800.
And drop off/pickup capability at pier 25 is a great benefit!
