Belaying Pins

I've been searching online for the last two months trying to find a set of belaying pins for my pin rails mounted between the lower shrouds. Brass or Bronze would be very nice but far too expensive. Thai Teak Marine had a good price for Teak pins at 11.84 ea. and they even referenced a Westsail part number(Original WESTSAIL part #14065), but after three attempts to contact them with no response I assumed they had gone out of business or had no interest in a small order. Does anyone know of a source for reasonably priced pins, I'm looking for a set of ten or twelve.

    Scotty,

A friend on a CSY 37 is having some made for him in WA state. He had the same problem in contacting Thai Teak Marine as you. He took the measurements from mine, which are from Thai Teak ordered a couple of years ago, as he is adding pinrails to his boat. I'll contact him and see if he can get his source to make additional ones for you. I believe the price was about what I paid for mine or a little less, about $20..00 each. He lives up in T-ville and the boat is at Harbourtown. You doin' OK?

A local carpenter made some for me.  Only $5 each.

If you are able to come up with a good source, please post it, as myself, and I'm sure many others, would be interested.

    thanks,

    Hey Werner,

good to hear from you, I'd love to get in on that order, are they teak or some other hardwood, I've seen them made from black locust as well. Thinking of hauling out anytime soon?

    Dick,

Thanks for the input, what's your opinion on traveling the Erie Canal as late as October.  I'm daydreaming of visiting Lake Ontario and wondering how long I'd have before I need to get south.

    Erie Canal in October:
If you do it during peak colors, you'll have an amazing view.  The Hudson Highlands are spectacular.  October weather in upstate NY is usually very nice the first half of October.  We did it in 2005, leaving mid October, spending Thanksgiving in North Carolina.  However, by the time we reached Florida, my wife insisted that we buy a cabin heater.  We didn't thaw until reaching Miami on New Years Day.

Favorable windows for going offshore to speed your passage become fewer as fall/winter progresses. You'll also be motivated to move fast and not linger to see the nice spots along the ICW.

Still, hundreds of cruisers do it late every year, not arriving in Florida until Christmas.  Cruising boats with enclosed cockpits have it much easier  It depends on your tolerance for cold.  We've become completely intolerant..

    Happy sailing

    Dick,

Thanks for the info, I grew up in Rochester so I'm good with the cold, wasn't sure about the closing dates for the locks.

Being from Wisconsin, my tolerance to the cold will never subside.  It has been engrained into me forever.

    Hey Scottie,

I left a message for my friend to see if his source wants to make some more. They are teak. I wanted to haul next week but it seems that life keeps getting in the way. My stern tube leak is somewhat under control and I've been diving on the bottom every month or so but one of these days the toilet wax ain't gonna stop the water anymore and the barnacles will win. I'll let you know when I hear back.
