forward facing nav station

    Why am I being put off buy the nav station not being forward facing. It's become almost a deal breaker with me. I want to face forward " seated " without doing any remodeling to the interior layout . Is this not rational, or just personal preference?   Sam

    It's a preference thing.  I used to have a hard time myself with not facing forward but I really like the traditional layout of the W32 and those beasty drawers in the original nav table.   Think of it this way, turn your laptop facing forward or chartplotter on a swivel viewable from the cockpit.   These 2 things might make you feel more at home.

    There are three ways to do it.  Forward facing, aft facing and starboard facing.  You may have seen the starboard facing one with chart drawers underneath.  I have an aft facing nav table on my factory W32.  It has a little bench where I sit, and storage everywhere.  Suits my needs well.  

    See the picture below. The picture shows the nav table top but the bench is not visible from this angle.  Closest to the camera is the hanging locker.

    Thanks for the shot Dick. One of the boats that I'm looking at is a Kendall / W32. I guess that's what you'd call it. I like the looks of it, but there are things about it that are different from a regular W32. The cockpit looks smaller, but it has a colming that makes it look like it would be dryer. It has a forward facing nav station with a quarter berth going aft behind where you sit. Not sure about this thing. I need to take a close look at it myself, or get someone that knows what they're looking at to look at it for me. This is an interesting boat. I'm coming back to the States in April, but my plans are not going to allow me to go see it. Might try to find a surveyor that will just go take a look for a fee to see what they think of it.   Sam

    One thing to look out for is the 4 corners on the deck.
    They can be wet.  Be sure to get a surveyor that has a moisture tester or rent one from someone.  
    That is one known issue that I'm aware of.

    The factory-finshed Westsail 28s have the nav setup you've described on the Kendall: forward facing, sit on the end of the quarter berth.  Seems to work okay as far as I can see.  I've had no negative issues with it.  

    Went aboard a Kendall in Anacortes a few years ago and fell in love.  If we'd had the money at the time, we would have snatched it up.  The one we looked at had the refrigerator/ice box under the settee seat (like the W28) which seems something of a pain at fist but ends up being a pretty good idea.  You get extra insulation on top from the cushions and the fridge isn't 4' deep with recesses at the bottom that are next to impossible to reach without falling in.

    Thanks Steve   I just read a survey that was done on this boat in, I think August 2011. This boat has a lot potential, but, it needs a lot to get it ready for blue water, a lot. Basically the boat is sound, but you're still looking at maybe 25k to get her right, not to mention the engine, bad report on the engine. I wouldn't rebuild it, I would replace it with that Beta Marine, either the 38hp or the 43hp. That's over 10k right there. I really like this boat but I just don't want this much of a project. The boat that I buy is going to have to be 80 to 85% there. Yeah, the search, I'm not burned out yet and it's been a year. I think I'm getting close. There are 4 W32's that I'm looking closely at. I'll pass on this one.  Sam

    Well, yeah, there is that. I wouldn't know since the fridge is on Lulu's side of the settee.  Actually, that points out one of the advantages with this setup: every time I want a beer, Lulu has to get up.  And, as long as she's up anyway, she might as well get me the beer.  Hey and how about some of those tortilla chips up forward, I mean, since she's already up and all.  Good thing she doesn't read this forum.

    Mary Rose has a Forward facing Nav Station on Mary Rose V.  She is a factory finished vessel.  We have the chart plotter on a swivel mount so that it is viewable from the cockpit.  I have some pics but I do not know how to insert them into this message.  Can someone educate me as to how to add pics to this site in the forums?
