This message is to anyone with a Westsail 28 and a loose-footed staysail. Steve Yoder is one per your blog, but anyone else please respond also.

I bought my W28 from the original owner who rarely used the staysail and it has no boom. I have taken Bud's suggestion to experiment with different locations for placement of sheet leads for the staysail, but have not settled on a location yet. I could use sail track or a couple of pad eyes for lead blocks. A complication that I have are the mast rails/pulpits mounted on either side. I would appreciate any input describing or photos of the placement for the sheet leads if your staysail is loose-footed.

Mark,

Thank you for the offer, but I prefer to keep the staysail loose-footed. Just wanting to drill holes through the cabintop in the right place the first time.

George,

I can send you pictures of where I mounted my sail tracks but I can't guarantee they're in the right place as I have yet to sail with the altered staysail setup. I certainly hope they are but I just mounted them about where Bud shows on his diagram in the maintenance manual and then am hoping that I have enough track to cover the sweet spot(s). But you definitely don't want to use my placement as a guide to drilling the holes in the right place the first time.

Hoping someone else comes up with an answer for you and that their answer confirms that I lucked out and won't have to fill and redrill holes.

Hoist the sail at the dock, with no wind, and pull the sheet down through a track block on the track until the leech and foot are evenly tensioned. That should mark the after end of the track. Install the track following the edge of the cabintop, and I believe that should be about the best you could guess at.

Steve, yes I would appreciate seeing some pictures of your track placement even though you have not confirmed it.

Bud, thank you for your suggestion. I will definitely try what you describe. Per an earlier email from you I have attached a snatch block a few places while out sailing and think I am close on placement, but only want to drill holes one time.

Bud and the WOA have come through again as usual.

George,

Go to my latest blog entry at www.yodersafloat.blogspot.com and click on the photo to get a larger view. You should be able to see my staysail tracks in this picture.

Steve, thanks for the excellent photo. I am keeping up with your blog regularly.

Hmm, I believe my track/or pad eyes will be forward by maybe 15 or so inches, but then I have not done Bud's test yet. Two other factors are that (1) my staysail is hank-on (made by Glynn Howsley) rather than roller furling, and (2) I have mastrails to deal with.

George
