Rendezvous ... California South

TIME FOR THE ANNUAL WESTSAIL RENDEZVOUS OF  SOUTHERN  CALIFORNIA, TO  BE  HELD

AT   RAINBOW  HARBOR,   LONG  BEACH

April 30, May  1 & 2, 2010

This year’s event will be held once again at Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach, at the foot of Pine Street, and across from the Queen Mary, on the first weekend in May!  We moved the date from the usual third weekend of May to avoid the conflict with the Gay Pride weekend madness, and it seems to have made a difference.   If you are unable to bring your boat this year, we hope you are able to drive to attend the rendezvous.

Contact the Rainbow Harbormaster right away for dock space, if you are bringing your boat.   The cost is eighty cents a foot per night, so berthing for a 32 will run thirty two dollars a night.   You’ll need to provide your boat’s papers (registration or documentation), a copy of your insurance policy, and a signed transient slip agreement.   I can email the slip agreement to anyone who needs it — that makes more sense than making a hundred copies when only six or eight boats may show up.

The Harbormaster’s phone number is 562-570-8636, and be sure to tell them you’re part of the Westsail Owners Association.   The address is Rainbow Harbor, 200 B Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA 90802.  In past years we have rafted the boats, some four deep, so bring some extra fenders and plenty of good lines.

As always, the rendezvous is a very informal and casual event with activities based on the number of Westsailors present, their energy level, and the weather. Our primary purpose is to renew old acquaintances, make new ones, tell almost true sea stories and most of all, visit boats !

Your host for this year’s event is Terry Shoup of the Westsail 32 Inalla.  The planned loose schedule will include the following events:

FRIDAY ARRIVAL – April 30 – Arrival and tie up at Pine Avenue Pier, Rainbow Harbor, Long Beach.  I’ll have my cell phone on (see number below) as well as monitoring VHF channel 68.  Throughout the afternoon and evening, informal socializing on various boats and on the dock — snacks, drinks, and camaraderie.

SATURDAY DAY– May 1 – Coffee and doughnuts on the dock, followed by Bud’s mini-surveys and perhaps some sail trimming lessons by Kern Ferguson.

SATURDAY EVENING – Dinner will be a barbeque, delivered dock-side from Famous Dave’s, right at the head of the dock.  Last year the cost came to twelve dollars a person, so I’d expect it to be about the same this year.  We’ll need a preliminary dinner count Friday, and a final one by noon on Saturday.

SUNDAY – May 2 – Coffee and potluck breakfast, then cast off the dock lines and head for your homeport or wherever the wind may take you.   If some others are interested, perhaps a flotilla to Catalina for those who can take a couple of days off work.

Remember, you don’t have to be a Westsail owner to attend.  Owners of all of the  Atkins/Archer/Double-ender types, and any other interested folks, are invited to enjoy the camaraderie and see our beautiful boats.  Spread the word in your home ports !!

Hope to see you this year or next!
