SIMPLICITY OF WORKING PARTS.

Electric refrigerators, plush carpeting, and automatic pilots are marvelous modern inventions for weekend sailors and live aboards After a few days at sea, however, a luxury becomes any device that can be manually operated and easily repaired. Pressure water systems need a manual pump backup. Wheel steering needs an emergency tiller. The icebox with cold plates takes the place of the refrigerator. The engine must be accessible from every angle. Forepeak playpens give way to single midship sea berths that support the occupant on either tack. A fresh water collection system could save the day. Good provisions for extra cooking and lighting fuel are a necessity.
