Forum Search

I've added numerous search boxes for the forums.

On the WOA Forum Home page - the search will search all the forums topics.

On the first page of each forum - the search only searches that forum topic.

On the Rendezvous forum home page is the only search for all the different Rendezvous forums.

Let's see how they work.

Tate McDaniel - has posted photo's and great write up on removing his bowsprit on Sundowner a W32. as well as a first hand report on the Gulf Coast Rendezvous.. Thanks Tate for your writing and images.

I've also posted a page on the Northern California Rendezvous with images and a movie of the life raft inflation! - I have more work and images of the post rondy Cruise the SF Bay to pull together.

I have put together a page for the Pacific Northwest Rondy mostly images would like some text to go along with the images.

Those of you who attended other Rondies -- I'd love to have a write up and images for a page.

About to Add a W-32 to Prince Edward Island

Am currently in PEI getting an old house ready for occupancy. Whern I return to Oklahoma in September will remove & replace fuel tanks and prep Bloodhound for an overland journey to Charlottetown. Will be dye checking all standing rigging. Just couldn't face a 3000 nm journey from Galveston, TX to Wood Isalnds, PE. The downside is an October haul-out until early May -- short season when I'm used to 12 month sailing.

On the morning radio net here, we learned that Dave Thomas (trust we have the correct name) on a W32, and a motorcyclist, died yesterday in a local hospital of a heart attack. Sorry we do not know him or have more to share, but more information should be available at www.clubcruceros.org or from other Westsailors here in La Paz.

Windblown 1980 to 1985

The WOA would like to thank Micheal McDiarmid and former owner Gregory Schroff of Abake W42 #114 for saving and passing on the 1980 to 1985 copies of Windblown.

The WOA was started in late 1979 largely with the publication of the Windblown by Editor George Bachman, Secretery Eileen Bachman and Assistants to the Editor Doris Dominguez and Abel Dominguez. They continued to edit and publish Windblown until December 1990.

To support the Westsail Circumnavigators project, I've added to each members record a check list of oceans and seas - the idea is to check off your vessel voyages that you know about. If I missed something for the list advise.

I have also issued a call for Rendezvous hosts for 2012 as there are only 4 scheduled at this time.

I have added several potential Rendezvous regions to the Westsail Rendezvous tab - hoping someone will be interested in hosting an event.

I'd like to startup a page or pages on the Westsail Circumnavigators. It would be great to have the owners name, vessel name and the year/s of the trip/s.

Bud adds "There is a W32 owner in the Bay Area that made an 18 month circumnavigation and came to a rendezvous the day he got back into the Bay. I don’t recall his name though. There is also a W42 owner that came to a Florida rendezvous and showed pictures of their circumnavigation, but I also don’t remember the name."

Jim and Jeanne Kenaston on W32 #657 Sabbatical 1979 - 1982 30,000 miles. Sabbatical now owned by Gary Baugh has been renamed to Betelgeuse. Jeanne has provided many great images of their trip and she has 2 online books at http://www.blurb.com/books/1828992 .

Featured Blog - site and Vessel

I have started using images and blog/site links as a feature on the home page. If you would like to have your vessel featured -- send or point me to your images - otherwise I browse our members listing and pick from the list.

This week Steve Waterman and Heron have the honors as he sent me the images on Saturday morning when I tend to make the changes.

Kirk Brown - Stores and Terry Shoup - Treasurer have been busy pulling together the items for the WOA Store. We will be adding a WOA Burgee and WS 28 and WS 32 decals to the store soon.

The WOA offers these items as a service to our members at cost including shipping and handling.

2011 Strictly Sail - Pacific

Pam and I are having a great time at the show. We were able to meet Kurt Lorenz W39 Raven and shared a seminar on cruising the Pacific North West.

We also ran into Shawn Breeding and Heather Bansmer of W32 Om Shanti and owners of Blue Latitude Press. They have published two guides Pacific Mexico and Sea of Cortez.

Hope to see more Westsailors today and other sailing friends.

Forum use with a slower link

We are changing broad band service form ATT DSL to ATT Uverse so we can drop an extra phone line at the house.

I'm using my Verizon HTC Eris sell phone's data service as a tether to the computer to read and post on the forum. I must say that this connection is quite good. Of course viewing the video is not possible and images are slow but the rest seems to work very well.

Of course ATT can't drop the DSL on one day and install the Uverse the next!! so we wait a week for the new parts etc... hopefully Thrusday 3/10 I'll be back up again.

Windblown Sneak Preview

You can see sneak previews of the articles for the Spring Windblown on the windblown blog

on this site. You must be logged in as a member to see that blog or to add comments.

From now on, new articles for windblown will be posted almost immediately as drafts.

They will lack the proof reading and formatting of Windblown (especially the placement

of pictures). If you prefer to wait for the full Windblown instead of taking sneak peeks, by

all means do so.

Every three months, the editor will collect these articles, plus any particularly interesting member

comments, and assemble the next issue of Windblown. It will be sent out by email or snail mail

as in the past.

The benefit of the blog is immediacy plus the ability to gather comments.

However, there is some concern that sneak previews may reduce readership of the newsletter. Feel free to comment on this procedure as comments to this forum post.

Members will receive via email a notice 14 days, 7 days and the day of your renewel date. Links and information in the email will assist you in using either PayPal or a check mailed to the WOA Treasurer Terry Shoup to pay your dues.

Old Forum HTML to pdf

I have changed the old forums topics html files to pdf files, removed the blank pages and also remove the links.

I do have limitations between the original documents in html > pdf > google docs for storage and presentation but I think this is a useable format and theGoogle pdf reader does allow searching if you use the right top button to open up to full screen viewing.

I belive that all the forum data from the old site is now in the pdf archive and is linked at the top of each new forum.

Not all of the old forums are available in pdf form as the data is not current nor timely. I do have a backup of all the forum content.

I have added on the existing web site the links to the new web site and also closed all the forums to read only with the address of our new forum. I have also downloaded the whole site and backed up on DVD.

Lindsey and Matt Pierce are also going to host the W43 page under Westsail Vessel Info - Thanks for your assistance.

The WOA account at Wild Apricot is being funded in the next few days so I can assign pages to members who wish to assist with site content.

You can still go and read the old message board at www.westsail.org. I do plan on changing the url to the old site to www2.westail.org later this week.

I also will be shifting www.westsail.org to this site later this week... I'm hoping to make the changes slowly to minimze confusion.

Look at the link Westsail info > Westsail web and blog links to see members with public sites.. Each member will need to add the links as they wish.

Member links - when you add a link to your blog or web site et al. do add in the full address ie http:// or ftp:// then the software will active your link.

When you post on a forum, there are controls at the top of the page that allow you to add url's as links and pictures as well as change layout and formats.

Also if you can't login, do try an older email address.

New Web site

After testing and working with the site for about 2 months, we have decided to make this the WOA web site.

I have just uploaded the WOA password from the existing site. If you were a tester I may have overwritten your password so try the old password. Of course, you have chosen a different password for the WOA site then you use on your banking site - right?

I will be busy in the next few weeks finishing up the details of the transfer and loading existing members information as well as past members records into the database and changing the url to the new site.

If you wish to admin a page or section please let me know as I can assign editing permissions per page to members.

Test web site

For those of you testing the site -- do look at the forum and start some converstations.

If we change sites the forum contents on most of the topics will be saved to html files and posted for searching. I also hope that someone will assist with gathering repairs by subject for a FAQ kind of presentation out of the message board content.

Volunteers?

I also need someone to come up with content to represent each model of boat - I have many photos but need the words.

I plan on a general test announcement February 1 to the whole membership.
